This Is The Yarn Mission

#ThisIsTheYarnMission

The Yarn Mission was created in October, 2014 as activism in the St. Louis area expanded showing breadth and longevity. While the community reacted to police murders of disproportionately young Black men and women (an issue that existed before the Summer of 2014), organizations that existed expanded their audience-base and new organizations emerged. The Yarn Mission was created to support and promote anti-racism/anti-sexism/anti-oppression activism. Specifically, the Yarn Mission pursues four primary objectives:

Skills Training

The Yarn Mission teaches skills that can be used for economic means and self-care. Knitting is an activity that can be relaxing, productive, and pleasurable in many ways. Additionally, knitted items can replace purchased goods and/or can be sold and/or traded. The Yarn Mission will attempt to directly facilitate individual economic growth by purposeful investment and through the online store.

Community Engagement

The Yarn Mission seeks to engage the public, who may or may not be involved in activism. This can be achieved through public teachings, direct actions that incorporate knitting, and through the dissemination of information. Additionally, the Yarn Mission creates a community of people united by art and value of black and marginalized lives.

Service

The Yarn Mission can provide service to the community through service projects, particularly those related to knitting (and other yarn arts). For example, we will have various campaigns where we donate items to help those in need. Additionally, the Yarn Mission endorses the business ventures of others who value black and marginalized lives.

Fundraising

The Yarn Mission earns revenue to support anti-racist/anti-sexist/anti-oppressive direct actions, events, and organizations. Through the sales and donations, the Yarn Mission has the potential of being a sustainable organization that can contribute to the efforts of others and initiate efforts itself.
